About
The Bay Area Collective Giving (BACG) is a group of Bay Area residents who, since 2017, pool a portion of our individual household’s annual zakat in order to harness our collective giving power and make a greater impact.
How to be considered
Organizations can pitch their zakat eligible projects directly by filling out this Project Nomination and a member of BACG will pitch the project on their behalf for the preliminary vote. What we look for in projects
- Local and Regional Impact: Although there is no formal policy in place, BACG's past gifts have gone to projects based in the Bay Area or greater California. Using BACG's consensus as our barometer, we continue to demonstrate a palpable desire to benefit our surrounding community, and anticipate this preference will continue to resonate and manifest in the trajectory of our annual giving.
- Direct, Unique Impact: Causes that present a quantifiable, direct and unique impact have received the most interest from BACG. A few other areas of focus for BACG have been:
- Immediate Need: Projects that also demonstrate a profound and immediate need. In 2020, 100% of BACG's funds went toward Covid related economic relief for California Muslims.
- Niche, Underserved areas: BACG has also demonstrated a desire to support niche work in underserved areas of our community. In 2019, we gave $50,000 to NISA to help fund their purchase of a battered women's transitional home.
- Legacy Projects: BACG has demonstrated a commitment to supporting institutions that will benefit the Muslim community for generations to come. In 2018 we funded 100% of the Bay Area Zakat needs of The Khalil Center, subsequently providing them with the ability to establish offices in Canada and Southern California.
